Transatlantic Crossing 2023: VA - Bermuda - Azores

Transatlantic Crossing 2023: VA - Bermuda - Azores - Portugal. Since we last posted a week ago, we have been keeping busy: we moved to a different dock in Norfolk, checked out the library, the art museum, and a glass-blowing show, watched a live education webinar about the post-covid phenomenon of Orcas attacking sailboats, vacuum-sealed loads of plant-based protein, learned new board games, and started our daily dock workouts, all while continuing to check, check, check the weather. Since the next weather window wouldn’t be for at least a week, yesterday we sailed up the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis, MD for a change in scenery.

Living on a boat for the summer! Nestor and I are accompanying our friends and their wonderful kids on a sailing adventure across the North Atlantic. We will sail from VA > Bermuda > Azores > Portugal over the next 2 months. Currently in Norfolk, VA waiting for a “weather window.” Here are some of our adventures so far.

We are sailing across the North Atlantic soon ⛵️! We’ll be sailing from VA to Bermuda to Azores to Portugal. As soon as this Sunday, we’ll be looking for our perfect weather window ✨. In preparation, we are getting all our cold weather gear ready, just in case. ((Read our most recent post on FB for all the details & to more closely follow the adventure 🫶🏻)).

I (Nestor) have been working on a new photography project that I want to explore as we start sailing the globe. I want to capture the landscapes, ships, and people I encounter and tell brief photo stories of those I meet during our travels. Less than a year to go! A five-year plan update.

It’s a few months into 2023 and we realize that we haven’t written an annual update on what we are doing and where we are in THE plan. Time is really flying by now. It is incredible when you spend a few years telling people you are working on a five-year plan to retire early and sail around the world and then before you know it there is less than a year to go. Nearly ten years ago, we started to dream up our wildest vision for an amazing, adventurous, fulfilling future, the idea developed organically over time but then when Yolanda’s dad was diagnosed with cancer we saw the danger in waiting too long. So we began creating spreadsheets, doing calculations and projections, took on extra jobs and then just put it all in grind mode. One day at a time. One extra shift at a time. One less car at a time. One job promotion and one carpal tunnel surgery at a time…. (IG limits post length, click on the link in our bio to read the whole article✌🏻)
