Day 5 – Dominica – Wacky Rollers Adventure Park (High Ropes Course & Zip Lines)

We realized that we were in for an adventure when we got off the ship to a nice rainy downfall, found our driver/tour guide and were told that despite the rain, the excursion was not cancelled. Interesting. We signed up for a high ropes course/zip line adventure, the tickets read: “participant must be in very good physical condition.” So we were even more surprised when we got in the van with an elderly couple, and soon found out that the gentleman, Tony, had just turned 93 last week and the woman, Marilyn will be 80 in April! At first we weren’t sure they were in the right tour group, but they soon confirmed they were and once we got to Wacky Rollers Adventure Park – about a 30 minute drive along the coast, they proved what troopers they were. The group of 6 of us were fitted with harnesses, helmets, and safety gear and headed into the rainforest with 3 guides, we climbed a wooden ladder about 40 feet up and began our adventure. There were over fifteen ‘walking’ challenges and about the same amount of zip lines from tree to tree. The challenges included walking along a narrow cable (tight-rope style), walking on top of moving suspended logs of various arrangements, and even a tarzan-style rope swing in which you jumped off a platform for a 2 second free-fall and swung/jumped onto a vertical rope net and climbed up it. We thought we were close to being done when they told us we were only halfway through! Tony & Marilyn didn’t cease to amaze us and met every challenge and did every zipline, only skipping out of the tarzan rope swing (as we were the only 2 of the group that did it). The last two ziplines went back and forth over a fastly flowing river. We ended the challenge course, enjoyed some strong rum punch with fresh coconut, sugar cane and oranges before being driven back to the pier along a beautiful winding highway along the coast. We chatted with Tony & Marilyn about all of our collective travel adventures and got some good advice from them about our upcoming Western U.S. National Park Roadtrip this summer. What an inspiring couple, still traveling and living life into their 80’s and 90’s, truly unbelievable. This entire day was quite an adventure, and we would highly recommend this excursion to anyone!
